Leave the dust behind

Hey hey hey, haven't been around here in a while.

Things that are important to me: self-improvement; feeling okay in my skin; writing writing writing; thinking about writing; running and feeling good about it; all the things I've learned

Things that are good about being at home: making fun of the shows on HGTV with my parents; my mom buying me clothes; my dog; joking with my little sister; my bed; sleeping in

Things about London (that will be good): museums every other week; British accents; trying new things (don't panic don't panic don't panic)

In high school I used to write lyrics on my hands so they would seep into my skin and become a part of me.  I do that in different ways now, I guess.

Make you feel my love

Weird thoughts night:
1. Time here passes really strangely.  Days are really long but weeks are really fast.
2. I am going to fail bio.
3. I can hear noises through the wall and I'm never sure if it's someone crying, laughing, or having sex.
4. Andy Rooney talked about how everyone has so many chairs and there are just too many chairs in the world and there are more chairs than there are people to sit on them, but there seems to be this reoccurring problem in college of there never being enough chairs for all of the people who want to sit down.
5. I want to write.  Also, not to fail bio.

Where are you now

Good things:
1. Long conversations with my roommate
2. Jack's Mannequin concert tickets
3. Meeting other nerdfighters on campus
4. Finishing the rough draft of my hum paper much earlier than I expected to
5. Decorating the hallway
6. Floreigners, Chocolate Milk Boy, Cell Phone Sam, "Do you live in Sholz?" Monty, etc.
7. Attempting to catch flies in my hand
8. Feeling sleepy at night
9. Whoever is playing the piano right now
10. The ukelele-playing boy who lives above me.

I don't want to sit on the pavement while you fly

Today we played Taboo and ate ice cream cake and went swimming and made s'mores and it was fun.  I think the hardest part of college (besides classes and stuff) for me is going to be starting fresh with people, but I think that's going to be the best part too.  Does that make any sense?  I'm not sure how to explain myself to people, because I can't really explain myself to myself.  That doesn't make any sense either.

Words to learn:

  • maudlin
  • effeminate
  • apopleptic
  • redoubtable
  • affianced
  • dentition
  • sentience
  • avail (as a verb)
  • gainsay
  • obstreperousness (I'm not sure this one is real)

Ten thousand drunken kids in a field can't be wrong

Right now I am making a mix cd for Michelle called "No Nickelback in College" because really, if I have any influence on anyone from high school, I want it to be that they shouldn't waste time listening to Nickelback when there is so much more out there.  Which is the way I tend to think about a lot of things.  And then I end up wasting my time anyway.  Isn't there a quote about wasted time, and how if you're enjoying it then it's not really wasted?

Here is a list of things that make me happy:
1. Van Gogh paintings
2. Anderson Cooper
3. New episodes of "Leverage"
4. "Gus don't be" the prisoner of marzipan, an incorrigible eskimo pie with a caramel ribbon, the one game at Chuck-E-Cheese that isn't broken
5. Foster the People

You pore your heart out but you never do see you never do see me

Thing One:  When chocolate starts to taste like pennies, which is the same taste you get in your mouth before you throw up, only you know you're not going to throw up, it's just that somehow your chocolate is tasting like pennies.

Thing Two:  Being asked by your econ teacher to take the attendance up to the office on the way to the computer lab; arriving at the computer lab to discover that the class can't get in because the door is locked; talking about colleges with people you don't really know because it seems that college is the only thing that anyone can talk about right now.

Thing Three:  Realizing you need a notebook for English class and then realizing that you have $20 in your wallet and a drivers license and a car with amazing mileage and a gas tank that seems to never need to be filled; going to Target to buy a notebook and using the 10-items-or-less checkout and then feeling awkward when you're handed your change.

Thing Four:  Being force-fed compliments that you don't want to hear; accepting that you're not going to get to see Deathly Hallows at midnight like you've been dreaming since you were eleven years old and your Hogwarts letter didn't come in the mail; still dreaming about winter formal dresses despite knowing that you won't be going; knowing that your friend will be going because she somehow suddenly has a boyfriend that you're not sure if you're supposed to talk about so you haven't mentioned it to anyone yet.

Thing Five:  Benedict Cumberbatch.  Martin Freeman.  Benedict Cumberbatch.  Martin Freeman.

Thing Six:  The night before a math test that you think you're ready for, but you always think you're ready and you never do well; everyone in the world who isn't your mom and doesn't understand that you just can't do math; your bitchy first period teacher who thinks football games at her alma mater are more important than coming to school; feeling like there's nowhere worse to be than second period when a certain someone just won't shut up about something that no one else cares about; the semicolon.

Thing Seven:  The collection of broken pencils and dead pens on your desk that seems to just keep growing bigger and bigger and bigger; the bottle of hand sanitizer you've had since the swine flu outbreak a zillion years ago that smells even worse now than it did then; wondering if it bugs anyone that you blog like this and then deciding that it doesn't matter anyway.

Thing Eight:  Listening to Michelle Branch; thinking about how the music you loved when you were ten years old is even better now, and much more relevant to your life; that deep-seeded secret love you have for country music and the stories it tells that you'll never tell anyone about; wondering why celebrity hair always looks so much better than non-celebrity hair.

Thing Nine:  Constantly wondering who the woman on the cover of the AP European History textbook is rather than actually doing the chapter 21 packet because it's nineteen pages long and it scares you and you hate the way your writing looks until after you've filled up a whole page.

Thing Ten:  Tabula Rasa when it comes to thinking of a Thing Ten; John Locke and his funny hair; everyone and their funny hair; your frizzy hair; thoughts of school; thoughts of graduation; thoughts of anything but now, tomorrow, next week.

But it's not true it wasn't you who cast the light

Thing One:  That listlessness that just won't go away and it's telling you to do your homework and clean your room and change your name and move far away and do something different, different, different.

Thing Two:  The stress that comes with group projects and being the only one a room of 40 people who has a working glue stick and lending said glue stick to people who don't know your name and coming up with all the words while everyone else cuts out socks.

Thing Three:  When you want to change your blog url but all the urls you want are already taken by inactive bloggers who either haven't blogged since 2004 or have never blogged at all.

Thing Four:  Listening to all of Greg Holden's music on youtube because your itunes is broken and Greg Holden never ceases to amaze you.

Thing Five:  Why can't I stop biting my nails?  I want to I want to I want to but I can't I can't I can't and that seems to win out, always.

Thing Six:  Always forgetting my house key when I need it and having to get one out of the mailbox; not having a drivers license; the fear of taking my drivers test that never seems to go away despite three tests next week and a book to finish reading and a powerpoint to finish compiling and college on the brain and gossip that ruins my days.

Thing Seven:  Feeling like I've been pushed into this box by high school and by what it's supposed to be and by who I've always been, and I can't break out and be someone new because everyone around me is telling me that this is the way things are and this is how they're supposed to be.  Wanting to change my name to something different, completely different, and move away and meet new people and study ballet and art and 18th century British literature and film and photography.

Someday I'll be living in a big old city

Thing One:  Trying to explain via college essay this desire to fly despite fear of heights, desire to be Taylor Swift despite fear of crowds, desire to be a ballerina despite total lack of flexibility and beauty and gracefulness.

Thing Two:  Greasy second-day hair that has been touched by guys sitting behind you on a stupid-smelly-bus because they're too bored for their own good; hair that makes your whole body itchy because it needs to be watched but it was too late at night last night when you got home and you just wanted to sleep.

Thing Three:  Writing something that you really like but being too scared to show it to anyone for fear that they might tear it down or question you or misunderstand you.  Being misunderstood.  Being confused for someone else.  Being the one girl in class whose name the teacher doesn't yet know despite the fact that you got 100% on the last test.

Thing Four:  Changing seats in class and sitting in alphabetical order by middle name and trying to explain to someone that your mom spelled your middle name wrong on purpose because she wanted it to be different; considering the fact that she must've been crazy to think your first name wasn't different enough as it is.

Thing Five:  Feeling so connected to a character in a play that when her heart gets broken you're trying so hard not to cry, focusing on Ben Mckenzie's giant arm muscles like every other girl in the room, trying not to cry and hoping no one will ask you why you don't like the play, because you do like it but you can't explain that you are Laura, feel so much like Laura sometime that it hurts to see her so real on stage instead of just in your head when you were reading the script.

Thing Six:  Listening to the new Taylor Swift song three times in a row because it reminds you of what it felt like to be a little kid, what it feels like to feel things so raw, so pure, without logic in the mix.

Thing Seven:  That back of the throat about-to-cry feeling that you get when you send your mom your failed attempt at a college app essay that probably looks more like a psychological cry for help.  The fear that she'll make you go back to that shrink again, when you know what the problem is, and it's that you can't deal with these people and their masks and their meaningless words and their sagging jeans anymore.

Thing Eight:  Knowing the words to the Taylor Swift song by the fifth time through.  Loving it so much that you're completely overeager for the album to be released now, now, now, so your mom can buy you the special edition with the bonus tracks at Target.

Thing Nine:  Two film cameras from 1975 with two brand-new rolls of film, and nothing to take pictures of, and weather that totally absolutely completely sucks and makes me feel like wearing giant sweaters.

Thing Ten:  Days when my converse don't make me feel good like they should, days when the weather gets me down, days when I use stupid cliches, days when I want it to be February already, days when the only thing that makes me feel like writing is this one Taylor Swift song.

And maybe someday down the road

Minuscule tragedies:  running out of eraser sticks, the new Twitter layout, the new Facebook chat that uses pictures instead of names, two B+s on my six-week progress report, rain and 75 degrees in the same day, awkward conversations with someone I'm not sure I actually like talking to, tripping in class, when Target doesn't carry the batteries I want for my parents' ancient cameras, spelling words wrong in permanent marker, contacts, blogs that have background music.

Small joys:  someone unknowingly quoting "The OC" on their blog ("And you, with all your little flaws, and your little quirks, somehow you keep drawing me back in"), consecutive good hair days, understanding the math homework, discovering that someone you never expected to be easy to talk to actually is, screencaps from "The OC", seeing "Everwood" on my dashboard, spare time, pop music.

All alone in the main hall

Things I like right now:
1. The bearded hipster dancing awkwardly next to me last night while wearing a turtleneck sweater. I want one of my own to take me to concerts and be awkward and such.
2. Rory/Jess shippers who imagine them to be living happily ever in a loft in New York city, where he's an accomplished novelist and she's a famous journalist and they have little lit nerd kids.
3. "The rich and powerful take what they want.  We steal it back for you."
4. Not Mondays.
5. Rachel Bilson's entire wardrobe.

I woke up this morning and played our song

Things I want to be/have/see/do (a pictoral list, aka how I wish I could apply to college, aka things I'm currently obsessed/in love with, aka I really want some oxfords or lace-up boots or both, aka it's my blog and I'll quote Miley if I want to, aka list to get out of tonight's letter, aka what the hell am I even saying right now):

And then we start the end

Day 2 - Your crush

I don't have one of these right now, and I have thought of several possible reasons why:  (1) I have impossibly high standards, (2) I have accepted the fact that crushes are pointless because I'm antisocial and never actually talk to anyone anyway, (3) I am in love with Seth Cohen, and (4) I am a very boring person.  Also there is the possibility that all of this possibilities are true.

As to why I took several days off from blogging:  I have been contemplating titles for my yet-to-be-written application essay/s, nearly dying of cramps, attending Rosh Hashana services, teaching people how to spell, pretending I am going on a canoeing trip, and going through my shoes.

God, I can't wait to graduate.

I'm coming home

1. There is a fly in my room and I swear it's been buzzing around here for the last three nights.  I don't understand how it's not dead yet.

2. TV makes me ridiculously happy in this way that I can't explain.  I think that's why I love it so much - because it makes me so happy.  That would be such a rewarding life, doing something creative and inspiring and making other people happy.

3. I think I might actually make it through this year in one piece, if only because my teachers seem to not understand the concept of homework and I'm really, really good at ignoring people I don't want to see me.

4. That's not to say that I can't feel other things falling apart around me, because I definitely can.

5. This needs to be a round number.  Feels stable.
1 com

First you tell me not to fret

I have goals.  Sorta.

1. No drama.  I am not repeating junior year... or freshman or sophomore year.  I am keeping my nose out of everyone's business and keeping my mouth shut and avoiding every possible crappy situation.

2. I will get straight A's.  Meaning I will actually study math.  Gross.

That's really it, actually.  I want senior year to be a good one... meaning I'm going to do what I want and not do things I don't want to do just to make other people happy (as in, I am not going to football games or basketball games because I hate them) and I'm going to manage my time so I can still watch the shows I want to watch and write when I want to and I'm not going to procrastinate (heheh).

I feel like in the last six or seven months or so I've realized who I am, or at least part of who I am.  And, as cheesy as it sounds, I want to stay true to that, because that's what makes me happy.  I think happiness is really undervalued.  Or maybe making oneself happy is.

Oh, also, I'm going to get in to college.  I'M GOING TO GET INTO COLLEGE.  Mantra?  Yeahhhh.

They said always call when you get there

So I've just seen "Inception", and because it's what I do (over-think things to the point where they become totally meaningless), I've been turning the ending over and over in my mind for hours, repeatedly coming to the same conclusion.  Either the top falls or it doesn't, but we'll never know either way.  Disregarding that, as well as the fact that it's all fictional anyway, we see Cobb turn away from the top.  Say he turns around; he'll either see the top spinning, or it will have fallen down.  If it's still spinning, he'll make a decision based on that.  Or say he doesn't turn around - say he makes the conscious decision to not know the fate of the top, the conscious decision to accept that where he is right now is where he wants to be despite the fact that it might not be reality.  There's a perpetual limbo - is it a dream or isn't it, is the top spinning or isn't it.  But it really doesn't matter.

This perpetual limbo - because I like to over-analyze things, I've put the top in a box in my mind, like Schrodinger's cat in the box.  The cat's both alive and dead at the same time because we don't know what it truly is until we look at it.  It's the same with the top.  So taking the top toppling over as a sign of reality, if we don't see the top fall, we don't know that it doesn't - but we don't know that it does.  So choosing not to care - what does that do to the top?

Now, my father would say that they all die in the end anyway, so who cares?  Which I suppose is true.  These are fictional characters and a fictional concept, and I'm just a teenage girl who's procrastinating her summer homework by writing up something that's probably already been thought about by billions of (other, much smarter) sci-fi enthusiasts all over the internet.  Nerd and conformist, that's me.

Other things I've conformed to lately:  a Seventeen Magazine workout plan, summer homework procrastination, staying up late followed by sleeping in late, watching two hours of youtube videos in one night, teaching a parent to use facebook, pointless and lengthly blog entries that no one will ever read.

It's hidden in the scars

Today I like:
1. spy movies
2. Miley Cyrus' fashion sense
3. giving anonymous advice via the internet
4. making lists
5. dreaming about short stories I know I'll never write
6. organizing my desk
7. my little sister
8. that my parents haven't noticed that I haven't put my shoes from Italy away yet
9. setting a schedule
10. forgetting about my summer homework.

I will consider you gone

I have:
the hiccups
a fascination with the word "gone"
a desire to go to the movies every single day
too many clothes
a rotten tube of mascara
ba ba, ba ba, this is the sound of settling.

If I could for just one night

Still stuck in my head:
"Cuz baby now I realize that I was wrong
When I said I didn't need you, soooo
Miss you bad so now I'm comin' home
So you better leave the light on
Wait for me and just leave the light on, heyyy"

Still watching:
Seth: What? Why, this is not supposed to happen.
Summer: You have to find the stud!
Seth: You mean like you did Summer?
Summer: Mhm, just get me the stud finder.
Seth: Oh Summer, I think you are the stud finder.

Still not:
Following people on tumblr who post a lot of "The OC" if they post too much KStew and RPattz shipping.

Still wondering:
What the hell is wrong with me.

You look like the songs that I've heard my whole life coming true

Day 07 - A picture that makes you cry

I honestly can't think of anything.  But I'm feeling listy tonight, so here is a list of things that do make me cry:

1. Anything that Nicholas Sparks has created
2. Lost friendships
3. December 6, 1941
4. Leaving
5. The Vietnam War
6. The series finales of "The OC" and "Gilmore Girls"
7. "Where the Red Fern Grows"
8. Late nights and songs by Greg Holden
9. "Finding Neverland"
10. Girls who congregate on the internet (specifically tumblr) to discuss their goals of being skinny

I'm in such a strange melancholy yet joyful mood right now.  Here's a list of things that I love:

1. Peter Pan
2. Dreams, knowledge, reality and surreality and unreality
3. The past, the present, the future
4. Goals for the future
5. The sound of the French language
6. Beautiful photographs
7. Monet's haystacks
8. Doctor Who
9. Pictures of Miley and Liam
10. When someone who literally stole my crayons in the second grade adds me on facebook... now do I accept?
