We won't get very far flying circles in a jar

It seems like whenever I want to blog, like I'm not really doing anything but there are words running through my head and they need to be blogged, I'm without a computer.  This week I went to New York City and I wanted to write about how much it doesn't make sense to me that people feel the need to take pictures of every famous and/or large painting they see, even if the painting holds no meaning for them.  I've been thinking about writing and personalities and what I'm doing with my life and the direction(s) I'm heading in.

New York City terrifies me and I don't think I could ever live there, but it's the city where Starry Night lives, and so I wish I could visit it every day.

Make you feel my love

Weird thoughts night:
1. Time here passes really strangely.  Days are really long but weeks are really fast.
2. I am going to fail bio.
3. I can hear noises through the wall and I'm never sure if it's someone crying, laughing, or having sex.
4. Andy Rooney talked about how everyone has so many chairs and there are just too many chairs in the world and there are more chairs than there are people to sit on them, but there seems to be this reoccurring problem in college of there never being enough chairs for all of the people who want to sit down.
5. I want to write.  Also, not to fail bio.

I think I need a sunrise

Today sort of sucked and I'm feeling sort of stuck but in a week and a half I'll be home and then I'll be able to feel stuck there for a while before I come back here.  I really like consistency and schedules and doing things on time but I hate monotony and staring at the same walls everyday and it feels like it's impossible to unify who I am and who I want to be and who everyone else thinks I am.  Tomorrow is Monday and I have yoga and I really hate yoga despite the fact that I keep telling myself I like it.  I want to stay in bed all day and watch "The Secret Garden" and crochet scarves and wear cozy socks but I have classes and finals and there are people everywhere all of the time.  I miss my mommy and my dogs.  Ugh.

They had lights inside their eyes

Somewhere in the deep dark depths of my mind I like to think that models have insecurities too.  I've always envied girls with a small group of best friends that they do everything with and even start to dress a little bit like and now I think maybe I've got that and it's really nice but also slightly smothering.  Why does it take tea so long to get to a drinkable temperature?  I want a boyfriend.  But don't tell H because I don't want him to be right.  That's silly, isn't it?  I only have five more days of classes before reading week and finals.  And two weeks till I'm home for winter break.  This first semester has gone by so fast.  And things have changed so much.  It's so strange, isn't it, how fast things change?  I feel like that's something that I say all the time.

We are shining and we will never be afraid again

October is over and so is my honeymoon phase with college.  I'm not unhappy exactly, but I have more unhappy moments than I used to.  I miss my doggies and my little sister and I miss Italy.  That's so strange, isn't it?  I feel like travelling.  I'm going to Seattle for Thanksgiving with Rachel and Kevyn and Isabelle, and I want to take my film camera with me.  Is that the most impractical thing ever?  It's been sitting in my desk drawer since I moved in, and I miss using it.  I'm still sad about my last roll coming out blank.

I've taken this new, or maybe old and renewed, interest in old books and old photographs, and I wish I was home so I could pull out our family history album again, and I really want to look at those old Dickens books we have in the attic.  I'm tired here, all the time.  I really wish my roommate wouldn't slam the door.

I thought it less like a lake and more like a moat

I'm not sure I could handle it if that baby turns out to be Justin Bieber's.  It's like that line from "27 Dresses," about feeling like you just found out that your favorite love song was written about a sandwich. Sometimes life sucks and everyone is cynical and is it really so bad that I want to believe that someone is really what they claim to be?

I have a lot of work this week, a lot of reading and noveling and paper-writing to do, but I like weeks like this, because they make me tired, and I can sleep at night when I'm tired.  When I'm here, I get up in the morning and have real breakfast and sometimes I have to go to bio but I can deal with it because I know that I'll probably be able to sleep at night.

My nano novel is going well, as in it's day 7 and I'm keeping up with the word count, but I don't want to jinx anything.  I have a paper due this weekend, and Thanksgiving's coming up, and a zillion other things are happening, but I really hope I finish.  Mostly just so I can say that I did.

Barely strapped in for this air conditioned drive

Here's one more post for before it's November.  I think October might be one of my favorite months.  Last night was the Lady Danville/Lenka/Jack's Mannequin concert and I was in the front row and it was amazing and fantastic and gorgeous and I wish I could live it over and over again.  Right now I should go to sleep but I don't want to, so I'm going to write about how my mom is coming for parents' weekend on Friday, and about how she's going to take me and Em and Rache and Kev out for breakfast on Saturday.  Tuesday is my bio midterm and I'm trying not to stress because that won't really do me any good, and it's going to start getting really cold soon and I need a warmer coat, and I think someone who lives above my just dumped something out the window.

Tomorrow:  breakfast, bio, dinner, more bio, sleep, Monday.

Baby it's like we're walking on a wire

I'm home for break and I've already been to Target twice and driven to LA accidentally and seen a play and visited my dad's new car storage unit thing and listened to NEEDTOBREATHE and Bon Iver and Jack's Mannequin and Joe Jonas.  I keep going through these phases of my-mother-is-so-annoying-I-need-to-go-back-to-school-now to I'm-so-bored-I-need-to-go-back-to-school-now to why-are-you-waking-me-up-it's-so-early-and-I'm-not-at-school.

So here are some things I've accomplished:  an almost-done outline of my NaNoWriMo novel, two and a half episodes of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," a pink-and-beige striped scarf.

Still to do:  read On the Road, read parts of Leviticus for hum, see "Ides of March," "50/50," "Footloose."

Wake up lying in a patch of four leaf clover

There was a shooting in my hometown today.  There was a shooting in my hometown today, and it's on the national news, and my little sister was at school three miles away, and what if, what if, what if?  Things like this aren't supposed to happen.  Not there, not so close to home.

I'm flying home on Saturday, and I think it's the right time.  I'm starting to cling to things that remind me of home, like the really ugly sukkah that was set up in front of commons today, and old Something Corporate songs, and chocolate milk with breakfast.  I called my mom three times today.  It's hard here, not having the permanence of things that were constants, like Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur every year, or driving my sister to school in the morning, or watching Anderson Cooper over dinner.  I really don't know how to feel right now.  I miss my mommy.  I miss Michael and Jen and Briana and Gabs.  I miss Megan.  I need to stop reading the news for right now.

Love is all we have to lose

Hi, blog.  I've missed you quite a bit, actually.  I have a paper due tomorrow and it needs editing but I don't want to work on it right now.  Jack's Mannequin's new album is out and it's wonderful and amazing and I am so, so excited for the concert.  I love concerts so much.  And music and friends and weekends.  Right now I'm listening to needtobreathe and it's not raining which seems a little bit strange.  I'd kind of gotten used to the sound.

Here are some things about college:  it doesn't feel like school.  It's hard to be around people 24/7.  I miss my mom and my dad and my sister and my dogs and my shower.  I miss Michael and Jen and Briana and Gabs and Ellie.  I really dislike the fly that's flying around my room right now.  I mailed a bunch of letters this morning.  I hope I get letters back.  My yoga pants and new sweats are coming on Monday.  I'm really excited for them.  It's been so cold here lately.  And I guess it will be for months.

I just helped Rachey clean her room and cleaning makes me feel so refreshed.  I'm so awake now, even though today is Friday and Friday is my ridiculously long day and I should just feel like sleeping right now.  I suppose I aught to try.  Aught is such a funny word.

Maybe we were made for each other

I've been reading a lot about introvertedness online and I'm learning that certain things about me are just the way they are because that's the way I am, and also that for every six hours I spend with people, I need almost double that amount of time by myself recharge so I can repeat the cycle.  What I can't seem to learn via the internet is how to be an introvert when there's an extrovert living six feet away from me.

So I'm watching a show I don't care too much about yet and I'm sitting on a smelly couch and I want to call my mom but I left my phone in my room and don't want to go back in there to get it.  Tomorrow I'm going to go to breakfast and then I'm going to spend all day in the library, doing the homework that I could've done today but didn't.  But now I want to write and sleep and be alone and that's really hard to do here and I think it'll be really good to have a single next year.

We're only so strong love

Today I said goodbye to my tadpoles Van Gogh and Gauguin and they'd sprouted legs in the last few days and had gotten so big and so it was a little bit sad dumping them into the communal tank like that.  It's Reed's Centennial and it's a big deal, which is something I didn't really realize until tonight when the mayor of Portland got up to speak and I began to feel like a belong to something, or belong with something, or am a part of something.  I like that feeling.  What I don't like is the hole that I found in the corner of my room, where the walls meet the ceiling, where I'm pretty sure a nest of Buick-sized spiders is living, waiting for me to leave so they can burry themselves in my shoes.

I'm a lightweight, better be careful what you say

I have this habit of trying to explain things to myself inside my head in case someday someone ever asks me why I do certain things or like certain things or am a certain way.  Only the thing is, I shouldn't have to explain myself to other people, and I shouldn't have to explain to myself why I shouldn't have to explain myself.  Does that make any sense?

Also you know when a song is so amazing and perfect and relative to everything that you think all the time that you can't help but play it over and over and over, and not just because your roommate is watching "Mad Men" on the other side of the wall and you don't really want to listen to it?  This usually happens at the most inconvenient time, when you should be worrying about rewriting your hum paper or sleeping or emailing your dad or  doing something more productive than this.

Awkward:  when you meet people in person and they're like, "whatever I won't bother remembering your name because you're boring/your roommate is cooler than you/your pink hair looks like crap" and then later you realize that they follow you on tumblr/vice versa.

How do you find your reasons in my deepest darkest night

I've been thinking about space, shared and separate and sacred, and the idea of compartmentalizing and rationalizing and lying versus omission.  I've been thinking about personality types and modes of behavior and being observant versus being open versus being both observant and open and also closed.  And what the word "shy" means and how it's related to observantness/awareness/I can understand what you're saying even though you're not making any sense/etc.  And about this promise that I made to myself to be more outgoing in college and how maybe that's not possible for me because I've come to see that when someone's telling a story I like to listen to it and think about it and not say anything unless they want me to say something because I can't say things I don't mean.  That sounds bad.

I guess maybe I don't like psychology because it makes me think too much about why I think so much and why I think the way that I do, and I think about those things anyway and I can't help it, and I'm sure psychology has something to say about that too.  I miss my dogs.

One foot in sea one on shore

What I do when I'm at home and I feel like this:  cut things out of magazines and make a mess on my bedroom floor; watch "The Notebook"; squeeze myself into small spaces and turn up Bon Iver really loud; blog even though I know I shouldn't.  When I'm sitting in a room with lots of windows and it's dark outside and I can't be bothered to close the shades, I wonder if there are people out there watching me, because during the day when I'm in rooms with lots of windows and it's light inside and outside, I look outside and I watch people walk by and boys juggle things that could be on fire but aren't and thank god.  Right now I feel like it's suddenly dawned on me that the walls here are almost literally made of cardboard and that means that when I'm standing in the hallway I can hear people talking in their rooms, and when I'm sitting in the common room and people leave their rooms and go to the bathroom, I can play this game with myself where I try to guess who's emerged from their own cardboard box, which is silly because I rarely find out the answers.

Things that make me cringe:  when people use internetisms in real-life conversations ("do want!" "ftw!" etc.); girls who don't shave their legs; pigeon pose in yoga class; how cold I am right now.  Last night after I turned my light off and my eyes adjusted to the darkness, I looked at the two shelves above my dresser and thought about how comforting it is to have a shelf full of books, even though they're not my favorites and most of them I'm sure I'll hate and I thought we were done with ancient Greece but we're moving back to it at the end of next week and I guess the way this works is that we're never really done with anything.  That's hard to get used to.

The revolution starts in a sea of paper cups

I keep starting things with "hi from college" like I'm at summer camp, but that's not right, is it?  Because this is basically permanent now.  This is my life, and it's weird that it's not really feeling weird anymore.  You know what else is weird?  That it never feels like a week night here.  It's really strange to be living with my friends.  Also, I would like the weather to realize that it's fall soon.

I've been thinking a bit about families and differences and diversity in small ways and also big ways and about luck and privilege and opportunity and who I am and who I could've been had I been born somewhere else or to someone else or just been born someone else.  Does that make any sense?  Sometimes I get the feeling that I've gotten so twisted around inside my own head that I'm suddenly speaking a different language and that's why everyone is looking at me so strangely.

I just deleted someone on Facebook and I literally clicked "unfriend" and I would have felt slightly bad about it except after I clicked it I noticed that he's a Republican so, no remorse there.

Come on skinny love just last the year

I feel gross right now, which is the worst time to blog, but my head is spinning with thoughts about too much intellectual conversation and star signs and I miss my mom a lot right now, and I think this is the first time that I've felt like that since I've gotten here.  Also I'm really really sleepy, did I mention that?  Sleepy + the middle of the month = grumpy negative thoughts.

I can hear someone hitting the buttons on the microwave down the hall in the common room.  God, the walls here are so ridiculously thin.  I miss my dogs.

Whatever they're making in the microwave is done.  I think I'm going to go to sleep now.

Making islands where no island should go

Emma and I just watched "Say Anything" and the scene where Lloyd teaches Diane to drive is one of my favorites because it reminds me of summer, not that that makes any sense.  Today I went to my hum conference leader's office, which is in the basement of the oldest building on campus, in this dark corner with a window that's basically ground level so you can see people's shoes walking by, and right now it's nearly midnight but the guy with the really loud voice who lives on my floor is out in the hall talking to someone and I'm not annoyed so much at how loud he's being but at how he's breaking quiet hour.  Like, go to bed, man.

Early this week I read at Poetry Night and it was terrifying and it made me think about how many writers are out there who are other things first, like doctors or teachers or whatever, and could possibly be geniuses with amazing things to say, but just never get the chance or maybe just never say it.

I just said something to them.  Was that rude?  I'm sorry if that was rude.  But they were talking about physics.  Isn't there a certain point each night where it becomes too late to talk about physics?  But maybe here there isn't.  People never stop talking here.  And most of it's interesting.  But I don't like biology.  I'm trying, really.  But I'm just not sure that I can.

And on that note I'm going to talk to Michael for a few minutes and go to sleep and then wake up and begin my horrible 9-to-5 Friday.

Where are you now

Good things:
1. Long conversations with my roommate
2. Jack's Mannequin concert tickets
3. Meeting other nerdfighters on campus
4. Finishing the rough draft of my hum paper much earlier than I expected to
5. Decorating the hallway
6. Floreigners, Chocolate Milk Boy, Cell Phone Sam, "Do you live in Sholz?" Monty, etc.
7. Attempting to catch flies in my hand
8. Feeling sleepy at night
9. Whoever is playing the piano right now
10. The ukelele-playing boy who lives above me.

Tore up like your baby blue jeans

Things I am not doing right now include:  sleeping, thinking about how much I miss my puppies, pushing back my comforter even though it's slightly too warm for it right now, putting away all that things that have accumulated on my desk in the last two days.  Today we went to Safeway and I did my laundry and we made Starry Night brownies and where else would I have met anyone who would've been willing to make Starry Night brownies with me?  It's really hard to get used to being here and I like it despite the fact that I expected too much from it and expected it to be a complete and total departure from high school, because it definitely isn't.  But it's really weird now to think about high school, because it really does feel like it was so long ago.  Even though it wasn't.  Does that make any sense?  Some days I feel like a little kid, and then on other days I can't believe how really really old I am.

I didn't call my parents today, for the first time in a few days, not even to tell them that I watched last week's "Doctor Who" or that I picked up my prescription or that we made Starry Night brownies.  I'm not even sure that my mom would care that we made Starry Night brownies.  She'd pretend to care, I guess.  Is that part of being a mom?

Oh, and:  I am going to the Jack's Mannequin concert.  As in, this is happening.  I am making this happen.    And what's bizarre to me is that I've met people who are legitimately interested in going not just because they like concerts or have never been to one (hi Emma) but because they appreciate music and talent and genius and smart people are just so refreshing after spending four years spending time surrounded by people who still sound out words when they read.  Obviously that's a hyperbole.  Mostly.

She wrote me a letter as we passed through Rockford

Emma just went to yoga and I'm listening to Something Corporate and it feels like summer even though it's not, because today was my second day of school.  I feel a little like I'm at summer camp, like all of this is temporary, but it's not.  And it's very strange, the fact that I'm living and learning and eating all in the same place.  It feels a little bit backwards and bizarre and I'm not really sure how to get used to it.  But the people are nice and I like my classes (besides the hellhole that is bio) and so it's all good, basically.  And that's really all I have to say for now.

We are all the same underneath the sycamore

I've been thinking about the idea of mind over matter and if you switch your wedding ring to your right finger before you sleep with somebody else, are you still cheating?  I mean, obviously you are.  But what if you convince yourself that you're not cheating, believe it so much that in your eyes it's true?  I guess that doesn't matter though, if you can't convince anyone else.  I've been thinking in theoretical terms a lot lately.  But that's not really new, is it?  I guess I've always done that.

And the other thing that I've been thinking about - changing; college; changing at college.  Letting change come naturally vs. forcing myself so out of my comfort zone in order to change that I don't have any fun at all.  Making friends; how to do that; if I shouldn't force it; if it's bad that I'm yawning at 7 o'clock; if it's bad that I really miss my little sister; if maybe I shouldn't be writing any of this here.  I'm sure I'll feel better tomorrow.  Or at the very least, Monday, when classes start and I have more important things to think about.  Or at least other things to think about.

I really want to talk to my mom right now but I know I shouldn't.  I shouldn't I shouldn't I shouldn't.  I feel like Rory Gilmore during her first night at Yale when she made her mom sleep on the floor of her dorm room.  Something that's going to sound bad no matter how I phrase it:  I know my mom would never do that for me.

Lights will guide you home and ignite your bones and I will try to fix you

Everyone is really nice here.  And dorky and funny and smart.  And a lot of people talk too much, I think to make up for feeling socially awkward/inadequate, but it's okay because everyone says really fascinating things.  My room is bigger than I thought it would be and the orange wall isn't totally horrid and making friends is weird but I think I'm managing alright.

It's really bizarre for me to be surrounded by people who are so (at least seemingly) confident in who they are even though anywhere else they'd be considered bizarre.  I mean, clearly I fit into that category too.  But it's just fascinating.  I've realized that I learn more about people by just listening to them but that's really hard here, because everyone is like me and was the shy kid in the back of the classroom in high school.  I have to keep reminding myself to talk.  Which is something that I never tried to do in high school, because I never felt like high school was worth my time.  But it got me here, so that's something, I guess.

Tomorrow I'm meeting with my academic adviser and signing up for my classes and I'm kind of afraid that once classes start I'm going to start to hate college.  Also I am so not used to having a fan and it's driving me crazy.  Its name is Blizzard.

Minor chords of major works

Packing is the biggest pain in the ass ever.  Like, if I knew how much of a pain in the ass packing was before I started doing it, I would've decided to go somewhere within driving distance.  There is no way in hell I am going to get everything to fit into these suitcases.  I wish I had a magical expanding bag, like Mary Poppins or Hermione.

I finished The Odyssey today.  I guess that's an accomplishment?  Tomorrow I have to finish packing.  Then, the Taylor Swift concert.  And then Wednesday morning I'm moving to Portland.  How weird is that?

The end seemed so much greater than either side of the equator

I'm not sure that there's anything worth writing down inside my head today.  I woke up and ate breakfast and watched "Numb3rs" and read The Odyssey (hfakljserfna;vnsjd;lajdsfl;kajewncdioskf.ajdsfjeanciafn) and watched "It's Kind of a Funny Story" with Jennifer and had dinner and watched tv with my family and now I'm not doing anything.  I only read five books this summer.  Six, once I finish The Odyssey.  Which I have to do tomorrow.  Also:  I have to pack up my life into suitcases so I can take it to college.  College.  Oh my lord.

I don't want to sit on the pavement while you fly

Today we played Taboo and ate ice cream cake and went swimming and made s'mores and it was fun.  I think the hardest part of college (besides classes and stuff) for me is going to be starting fresh with people, but I think that's going to be the best part too.  Does that make any sense?  I'm not sure how to explain myself to people, because I can't really explain myself to myself.  That doesn't make any sense either.

With her heart heavy still

I just got home from Briana's, where we ate dark chocolate covered pretzels and looked at yearbooks from middle school and talked about books and tumblr and right now I'm listening to Jack's Mannequin and I have this headache that I'm pretty sure is the resurgence of the one I woke up with this morning.  My roommate messaged me on Facebook and said that our room has orange walls and purple doors and I think that next year is going to be full of headaches, and also, holy crap, I'm going to college on Wednesday.  My love affair with pop-tarts has reached this point where I am seriously considering emailing my HA and asking her if there is a toaster on our floor.  Is that ridiculous?  I'm pretty sure it's ridiculous.

The other day when I was packing my books, I flipped through The Elements of Style and I saw a note about how you're not supposed to use too many qualifiers, but I very much kinda a lot enjoy qualifiers.  And so I'm going to use them all over the place if I want to.  Because how else am I supposed to express that I really kind of have no idea what I'm talking about?

Ten thousand drunken kids in a field can't be wrong

Right now I am making a mix cd for Michelle called "No Nickelback in College" because really, if I have any influence on anyone from high school, I want it to be that they shouldn't waste time listening to Nickelback when there is so much more out there.  Which is the way I tend to think about a lot of things.  And then I end up wasting my time anyway.  Isn't there a quote about wasted time, and how if you're enjoying it then it's not really wasted?

Here is a list of things that make me happy:
1. Van Gogh paintings
2. Anderson Cooper
3. New episodes of "Leverage"
4. "Gus don't be" the prisoner of marzipan, an incorrigible eskimo pie with a caramel ribbon, the one game at Chuck-E-Cheese that isn't broken
5. Foster the People

And your heart is a stone, buried underneath your pretty clothes

I keep thinking about Stockholm Syndrom and how sometimes things are labeled so easily and what about case-by-case basis, and good people and bad people and in-between-the-word-is-a-zillion-shades-of-gray people?  Today we went to the mall and I was trying on jeans and they fit perfectly and I was just standing in the dressing room, looking at them in the mirror and wondering how they were so different from the jeans I already had at home, when one of my favorite songs came on the radio.  And I thought, these are the jeans, I have to get these jeans.  So I did, in every color they had.  But now I'm sitting here and the window's open and i can hear crickets and I can't help but wonder about fate or coincidences or random occurrences of undeniable magicalness.

I am leaving for college in a week.  I don't know what to think about it, so I don't.  I talk about it like it's an abstract thing.  It's happening on Wednesday, but it's not really.  I don't think it'll hit me until I'm lying awake in my dorm room bed at 3 am because everything smells different.

I'll be on the 7 o'clock to Chicago

Tonight I went to a barbecue at Michelle's house, which was fun, and boys are stupid, and not just in the way that boys are stupid because they'll never like me because I'm ugly and fat and blah blah blah.  I mean that boys are actually legitimately stupid in the way that they think dead baby jokes are funny and criticize Hannah Montana without any logical basis and my little sister just walked into my room "to say hi" even though she could very well have done that from the hallway and what just happened to this sentence?

My mom just gave me a hug and said, "you smell like smoke" and okay let's think of all the possible reasons that Natasha could smell like smoke?  Because it's definitely not because she was smoking.  I thought I was at this point where I'd made it clear to my family and friends that I think smoking is absolutely disgusting and have no intention of doing it.  Another thing I realized tonight:  I do not believe that Bones and Booth need to get married now that she's pregnant.  But I don't like the term "feminist" because it has all these bad connotations, or at least connotations that I don't think apply to me.

Also:  I take issue with people who can't appreciate pop music and hold themselves above everyone else because of that.  And I take issue with the fact that my clothes now definitely smell like smoke and are going to have to be washed before I wear them again, which sucks because it takes two wears for these shorts to be comfy and at least one wear for this chambray shirt (funny phrase) to be soft enough that it's more comfortable than a cardigan.

And now I'm going to go write because it makes me feel better.  Not that I'm feeling bad right now.  Because I'm not.  At least I don't think I am.  Whatever.

There's a wrinkle in the water

Today I finished a collage and read 10 pages of The Odyssey and read some fan fiction because it's a disease, okay?  I made myself a grilled cheese sandwich for lunch and had some s'mores ice cream and that was really it.  Monday starts what is really my last week of summer.  But I think that's a good thing, because I'm really kind of bored with this doing nothingness.  And right now it's past 11 and I'm blogging because I told myself that I should, but really I just have to pee.  I have this thing about goals, and plans, and backing out and changing my mind, and I always do that, and I always tell myself that it's okay, because really, it is.  Who cares if I don't blog everyday in August?  Who cares that I changed my mind at the last minute and didn't switch schools when I had planned to?  But I know that I'm only going to have that luxury for so long.

And that's all my deep thoughts for right now.  I really have to pee.

Ooh bla di ooh bla da, life goes on

Ohshit, I'm late.  But I have a really good excuse.  It's a really really good excuse.  It makes my 30-minutes-late totally valid.

Okay, no, my excuse is crap.  I was writing Dramione fan fiction.  It's fun and there's no pressure and it's total shit but that's okay because all fan fiction is.  And it's fun.

I have nothing interesting to say today.  I'll blog for real later.  Yes, I will.

I like that we are kinda strange so won't you stay near

Oh right, okay.  So today I ate French toast for breakfast and went to Target with my mom and bought a bunch of stuff I need for school.  Then I came home and read my daily chapter of The Odyssey and worked on a collage and now I'm listening to Joshua Radin and thinking that I should go to bed soon because I'm meeting Briana for breakfast tomorrow, which means I have to wake up at a decent hour.  I piled up some of my books to take to school and I can already tell that there are too many.  But I don't want to worry about that now.

I've been trying to fix up my 2009 nano even though it's crappy, because I have this thing where I keep telling myself that it's all a learning experience and the only way to get better is to suck for a really, really long time.  I think John Green said something like that once.  I have glue under my fingernails and it feels really bizarre.

That's it for today.  I want to be writing right now.

I'm just a notch in your bedpost but you're just a line in a song

Today I got to thinking about how the Draco/Hermione story (or lack thereof, since it's not canon) is basically (basically meaning I am oversimplifying something that can't really be simplified at all since it's interpreted a zillion different ways in a zillion different fan fics) Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet, with a lot more complications and a lot more cussing.  And that made me think about how all love stories are basically the same story, and that made me think that that's the same thing I've thought a zillion times.  Something else I've done a million times - started reading a Dramione fic, only to abandon it 300 words later because Draco's house elf is named Cue Tip or Ron is cheating on Hermione with Lavendar (seriously?) or Arthur Weasley is Minister of Magic (it's Kingsley Shacklebolt, man, it's gotta be) or Harry is dating Pansy while Ginny sleeps around or Charlie is with Luna, etc etc.

It just amazes me how you can take a character that's been so well-defined and perfected by someone and just totally tear him or her to shreds.  Ginny is not a bitch and Narcissa Malfoy is not a cookie-baking grandma and fan fic writers overuse the word "irrevocably" and constantly use "the witch" as an alternative to "she."  And what is with phrases that sound nice but don't make any sense, like "artless smile" and can we talk about this ridiculous plot where Ginny wants Malfoy and Ron wants Hermione back even though he cheated on her so they're cooking up some scheme to break them up?  And yet, I can't tear my eyes away.

And also I think it's really interesting that in some of these fics there are spells to do things I never would've thought of.  Like magical wedding bands that prevent spouses from cheating on each other.  I'd think that the wizarding community would only use magic to make things easier on themselves, but in some ways, it seems they've made them harder (as in, no electricity or cell phones) and some of the stuff they use is just sort of creepy and kind of totally restricts free will.  Of course, none of it's real anyway, so.

It's realllllly time I get back to school.

Lost in a maze of a thousand rainy days

I've started to think about what books I want to bring to school with me, and I've also been considering the fact that no matter what I bring, I probably won't have time to read it.  And I've been thinking about how British terms are so much better than American terms ("ice lolly" for "popsicle", "jumper" for "sweater") and about details and how some people (like my mother and certain writers) find it necessary to provide too much and how when you're reading you can skim and skip over it, but when someone's talking to me I have to listen to them.  And that's all completely obvious, isn't it?  I think myself in circles sometimes, and forcing myself to blog everyday is really just forcing myself to write it down and try to make sense of it, even though it'll never make any sense.

Right now I'm thinking about cliches in storytelling and how you can break them, or how you can use them and twist them around so they don't seem cliched anymore.  That probably doesn't make any sense.  How does apparition work in the rain?  What if it's snowing?  Sometimes I forget that magic, at least in that sense, isn't real and I start to pick out all of the things that the books never actually explained.  All the little technicalities.  I keep bumping my hip on the counter in my bathroom, and today I nearly knocked over a lamp.  And now I think I've accurately depicted what the thoughts in my head look like.

I'm gonna kick until I need new shoes

Today my mom and I went to the Grove and saw "Cowboys and Aliens" (I nearly fell asleep, oh God I hate westerns) while my sister went to a pool party with her camp friends at this huge house in Beverly Hills.  I guess it's probably just personal taste, but I cannot understand why someone would choose to live in an area that is constantly crowded with traffic and tourists and just noise.

I really, really hate the word "lover."  It is old-fashioned and kind of creepy and doesn't have a lot of weight and I just don't like it.  And that thought makes me think about labels and how I really don't like them, and "lover" is really just an evasive label to avoid defining things, and every time I read I wish the writer had used a more concrete word instead.  But that's totally contradictory with how I feel about labels.

The best part of "Cowboys and Aliens" (my brain just can't stay in one place) was a glimpse I got of a speckly horse in the background.  Apparently it's called a pinto horse or possibly an appaloosa and it's gorgeous and if someday I marry a man who rides horses and we move to the country and he's really rich, I'm going to ask him to get me one and teach me to ride it.

Band on the run

So (10 years in the future-ish) if it turns out that I'm a horrible novelist and I have to resign myself to doing something else (although hopefully I'll love whatever it is and it won't feel like resigning), I'm going to write fan fiction.  Because when you're using someone else's characters, you don't have to create them and characterize them.  You're only expanding on what's already been written.  Which is something that I've learned now, as I've basically descended into full-blown fan fiction addiction.  I guess I really shouldn't be surprised.  This is how I get with everything - books, tv shows, even writing, occasionally.  I'm sure it'll subside eventually.

Right now I'm trying to type this using only the pads of my fingers because my nails are wet.  This color is called "calming cocoa" and while it looks brown on my nails, it really does look pinkish in the bottle.  So suffice to say (what a funny expression) I'm feeling kind of deceived by it.  My head is itchy.  When I'm old and rich I'm going to have a hand dryer set-up to dry my nails quickly for me, so I don't have to worry about getting pieces of my hair stuck.

It makes me laugh that Hermione's parents have different names in every piece of fan fiction I've read.  Canon is such a funny thing.  And I don't remember anything about wards in the 7th book either, but they're turning up everywhere.  The same with Astoria Greengrass.

I'm awfully boring tonight, aren't I?

I set fire to the rain and I threw us into the flames

Things that I find utterly ridiculous today:  when a character in a book says, "well, that's an interesting plot twist" because it obviously is because the writer planned it that way; the phrase, "I find you much changed" because it sounds bizarre and antiquated; that tv news anchors find it appropriate to interview the families of dead soldiers only hours after the deaths; how I can read the same story a zillion times (or hear the same song) and still be fascinated by it; the overused expression, "I know, right?" that holds really not a lot of meaning at all; the fact that the word "fuck" doesn't bother me anymore.

I've been thinking about war a lot, not any one war specifically but mostly just the abstract concept of it, and how it's so fascinating in books and movies but so absolutely sickening in real life.  But it continues to happen again and again and we continue to write about it and tell stories about it and what if we just stopped?  If everything related to war just went away and it was just a distant memory, like cholera or the guillotine.  Of course that's impossible, because people suck.  Sometimes I'm trying to explain something to myself, or to my little sister, and the only reasoning that I can come up with is that people suck, and they're emotional and impractical and stupid, and that they don't know any other way to be.

I will never understand why fan fiction writers insist on killing Luna Lovegood.

Then who the hell was I

This is going to sound completely ridiculous and I swear I'm not clinically depressed or anything of that sort, but what's the point of working so hard for the future and for my career and for the life I eventually want to have if I could die at any minute?  There is a fly in my room.  It's teeeeeeeeny tiny and it's flying around in front of my computer screen, which I love to death, really, but it is really reflective so sometimes I can see myself, which is kind of off-putting, and also it shows any and all dirt - including this stupid fly, which just flew way too close to my face.

Don't you think that the phrase "like looking for a needle in a haystack" could be easily replaced with "like finding a dropped contact on a carpet"?  Because that's what I just did.  Today I had lunch with M and L and J because M is leaving for Europe on Monday and by the time he gets back, I'll be packing to leave for Portland.  It's so weird to think about not going back to high school, about how we're adults now.  M said something today about how he wishes he was 30, because then he'd get to skip all the school and stuff and go right into having a job and a wife and kids.  But honestly, I don't want that.  Okay, so I guess the point of all the hard work is the experiences that you have along the way and the people you meet and the things you learn.

Where do flies go when they can't get back out side?  Is this tiny little fly just going to drop dead during the night somewhere in my room, where it'll be until it gets vacuumed up next week?  I wonder how many dead flies are already in here.  How creepy.

We'd waste our weeks beneath the sun

So basically I've done absolutely nothing this week besides read a few chapters of The Odyssey and go to the movies once.  And I continued that trend today and I'm not even thinking about anything very interesting right now so I'm not sure what I'm going to write, but I promised myself that I would anyway.  There is something going on outside my window and it's loud and sounds vaguely like construction, which is ridiculous considering it's 10 o'clock and can't be the workers on the freeway because it's too close.

Okay, so what I'm thinking right now is - is the frozen food section different in Britain?  I feel like that's a dead giveaway in writing, a way to let your readers know that you're crap and they should just give up now - when your setting feels unauthentic.  Or when your characters stay stupid things or use cliches that no one ever uses or behave too well.  How do you make what you're writing feel real?  Or at least not completely ridiculous.

I think I need to start school now.  I need a routine and other things to think about besides Odysseus and stupid romcoms on Netflix.

Go on, film the world before it happens

Today/tonight/last night I've been think about death in the middle of summer and the cruelty of war and the way droplets of Febreeze stick to your legs if you walk through a room right after you spray it and the parts of ourselves that we insist on keeping hidden from everyone.  I've been thinking about being eleven years old and how when I was eleven years old, I thought I was invincible, at the point where things can only get more exciting.  But now eleven seems so young, so naive and now I'm at this point where I'm sitting here with my laptop burning my legs, thinking that "Northern Downpour" by Panic at the Disco is one of the sweetest songs I've ever heard.

I have no idea what to say now.  My head is full of all these things that I haven't done and want to do, things I want to experience and feel and learn, and of course there's this lingering fear of what if I can't?  I'm not sure if I believe in God but I think I believe in fate and maybe the idea of fate working against you, of circumstances that aren't in your favor, of luck and unluckiness and the possibilities of what if?  I'm afraid of boxing myself in somewhere and then getting stuck when I change my mind and decide that it's not what I want anymore.  I think I'm running out of get-out-of-jail-free cards when it comes to changing my mind.

On the back of a motor bike with your arms outstretched trying to take flight

I've been reading this Dramione fan fiction, which I know sounds completely ridiculous.  I've avoided fan fiction since I first learned it existed, but now here I am, reading it, and I can see that there's something to be said for it.  I love the Harry Potter novels, for all that they've given me and what I've taken from them, but they are about Harry Potter.  Harry Potter is the main character, and all the rest propel the story along, getting it to where it needs to be.  And I can't help but think that maybe that sucks a little bit, because there are characters in the Potterverse that are, in my opinion, much more interesting than Potter himself.

And so as I've been reading this, I've been thinking a lot about character development, and how really effing hard it is.  People are so, so complex, and how can you mimic that with just text on a page?  How can you create someone who seems so real that they blur the line between fiction and reality?  Is this the same thing that I wrote about last night?  I really have no idea.  My mind is circling and circling over all the same thoughts and concepts and questions, and I always come to that same conclusion - I really have no idea.

And the other intriguing thing:  in fan fiction, you're not limited to the world of the Potter books, kids' novels - despite the characters growing up themselves.  You're not forced to ignore that they're human, that they're 17, 18 years old and are living in hell and are constantly cussing.  There's an added layer of reality that I haven't felt before.  Does that make any sense?  And there's also an added layer of not-reality, of alternative-reality, of these-two-characters-aren't-canon-but-it-doesn't-matter.  But it's not really reality at all, because none of it's real.  Sometimes it's really easy to forget that, and I think that's maybe a sign of good writing.  Or at least of good storytelling.

I kind of hate that there's a difference.

Karen dit que Paris c'est grand

What if I blogged every day in August, at least until I leave for school?  And I mean substantial posts.  With thoughts about things and more than just lists of daily activities.  So today is August 1st and it's the beginning of my last month at home and so it's the beginning on 23ish posts in a row.

I just finished watching a romcom called "Someone Like You" and it was adorable, like all romantic comedies are, but there always comes a point when I'm watching one of these movies where I have this sort of out-of-body experience where I realize that what's making me so happy, what I'm enjoying so much, is crap spewed out by Hollywood big wigs and Nicholas Sparks and whoever.  And I know that's really cynical, and I guess what I'm saying is that I really enjoy watching relationships develop in movies and novels and such because when you're living your life and forming bonds with people you don't realize you are until one day you look at who you're sitting next to, and suddenly think, how did I become friends with you?

That's how I've been looking at everything lately, and I'm not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing.  To clarify:  I'm studying everything and everyone and it all seems like something I could write about.  That's the object, isn't it, a really good story?  But the problem is that every time I think of something and begin to write it down, I realize I've seen it played out a million times in bad movies and poorly written novels.  Which begs the question:  if I rewrite Twilight, or the essence of it at least, changing the names and the vampire into a mermaid and whatnot, and if I write it well, as in really effing good, does that make it okay?  Or am I stealing someone's original idea?  Are any ideas really original?  I once had this quote on a post-it not stuck to my computer screen, something about how if you wanted to bake a totally original apple pie you'd have to go back and plant the first apple tree yourself, or something like that.

So everything is just a recycling of old ideas.  I guess my main question here is, if that's true, why are we wasting our time with crap?  Why do I watch so many bad movies and read so many crappy books when there is so much more out there?  Why do we default to what's easiest?  Why do you have to search really hard to find the good books at the bookstore, but the crappy bestsellers (not to generalize that all bestsellers are crappy, because they definitely aren't) are right at the front, on the buy-one-get-one-half-off table?  Why is the bookstore the most crowded when everything is 40% off because the store is closing?  That makes me really sad.  But that's not the point.

The point is:  I want to write a really good book.  But first I have to read and watch and listen and learn everything I can.  So should I be wasting my time with bad romcoms because they're easy to get, or should I work harder to find the good ones?  And more importantly, is there such a thing as a good romcom?  Who came up with that word in the first place?

Can I make it better with the lights turned on

It's 11:52 PM and I just watched a movie that I didn't like very much but it made me think, and I hate when movies do that.  I love thinking, really I do, but I wish it came as a result of things I enjoy.  Does that make any sense?  Probably not.  I've got my laptop on my lap and it's really warm because it's plugged in but I'm too lazy to go unplug the charger, because I refuse to unplug it from the laptop but leave it in the wall, because that's a waste of energy.  But is my getting up to unplug it a waste of energy too?  The things I waste time thinking about...

Today I went to the movies with Gabs and Gilles and then we went to Huntington Beach and had lunch and drove home down PCH with the windows down and the sunroof open, and I've never actually opened the sunroof before so that was a new experience.  I got home at 4 o'clock and I kind of immediately fell into this state of boredom.  I've been doing nothing all summer, just lazing around my house everyday and occasionally running errands, and then one day I'm out and when I get home I can't remember how I usually occupy my time.  It's so strange how easy we adjust to new things and forget the way things used to be.  Does that make any sense?  Probably not.

I really want to finish this post before midnight so the date is right.  I've been writing a lot lately, writing and editing and writing again.  But what I really should be doing is reading The Odyssey, and I know that and it's sitting there on my desk taunting me, but every time I look at it, I think, oh god the odyssey why.  And then I don't pick it up.  But eventually I'm going to run out of days where I can do that.  Tomorrow I'll read. Maybe.  Probably.  I promise.

Who's the boy you like the most

I've just finished season 4 of "Psych" and there's this re-occuring serial killer and season 3 ended with an episode about the serial killer, and so season 4 does as well, and so does season 5.  But I haven't watched season 5 yet, and so they haven't caught the Yin to the Yang and so I'm sitting here feeling like I'm being watched, because this is how I always feel after I watch something creepy.  This is the feeling that keeps me up at night.  And the only way I've figured out how to overcome it is to stay up so late that I get a headache and my eyes hurt and I practically fall asleep sitting up.

So really I should watch a stupid romcom on Netflix and put on my pajamas and I'm going to go do that.  Right after I find something to title this post with.  And then maybe later when I can't sleep I'll write down all my thoughts on "Never Let Me Go" and the television archetype relationship of two characters who are perfect for each other but can't be together because of a, b, and c, and also I might make a list of all the books I want to read before I leave for school.

Seems like everywhere you turn catastrophe reigns

I've been absolutely horrendous about blogging lately but basically what I've done is see "Les Miserables" with my mom and see "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2" at 12:01 AM after waiting 10 hours outside with my friends.  I've bought some stuff for school but not nearly enough, and I've got The Odyssey sitting on my desk taunting me, but I haven't started it yet and it's nearly 500 pages and so I really should start it soon because I've got barely a month left.  I've been watching a lot of Hugh Grant movies as well as a lot of "Psych" and I haven't been reading nearly as much as I should be.  Right now I'm listening to a Sansa Stark fanmix and it's fantastic and I love fanmixes so much because they tell stories and also expose me to music that I wouldn't normally listen to and also I think getting music from strangers is the best way to get to know them; does that make any sense?

Tonight Mom and I are seeing a musical called "Fleetwood Macbeth" and it should be sufficiently bizarre.  Gillian gets home tomorrow and even though she's going to be grumpy for at least 24 hours, I'm really glad she's getting home because I miss her and she hasn't written my nearly enough letters.

I'm full of a zillion emotions regarding Harry Potter and the end and all that but basically what it comes down to is that I feel like there's a little hole in my heart now where these characters and their stories have forever buried inside.  I didn't cry much during the movie (besides when Harry entered the forest with the resurrection stone and his parents and Sirius and Lupin joined him) but afterward, yesterday and now, I've been looking at pictures and reading others' thoughts and I guess what I'm really going to miss is the whole community that loves it so much and constantly thinks about it all and argues over it and debates what's coming, because what's coming isn't much.  And that's the sad part, I think.

I only have two more songs left on this mix and I'm going to finish listening to it and then I'm going to take a shower and blow out my hair straight because I never do that and it's summer and why not?

We are fated to pretend

Tonight I saw "Monte Carlo" with Gabi and we had Panera for dinner.  On Thursday I had breakfast with Simone and Taylor.  But besides that I've been to Target four times in the last four days.  I had dinner out with my parents once and lunch twice and I've been watching a lot of "Psych" and not really doing anything at all.  Tomorrow is the 4th of July and I (surprise) don't have any plans.  I'll probably sit in the bathtub with Gracie like I did last night, when somebody misread their calendar and decided it would be a good time to launch off fireworks and freak my dog out.

I've been writing a bit and sleeping a lot and that's what summer's supposed to be about, right?  Somehow I feel like I should be having greater adventures than the ones I'm having.  NKOTBSB concert on Wednesday, San Francisco on Thursday for the Picasso exhibit and the Gertrude Stein collection.

There's a key to your heart, no one's found it yet

Right now I am sitting at my desk listening to the new Selena Gomez album, which isn't totally horrible, and not really doing anything besides that, which is fine, I guess.  Tomorrow I'm going to the doctor so he can sign my health form so I can go to college, and I'm getting my hair cut, dyed back to its natural color hopefully and maybe cut more than half an inch, if I'm annoyed with it enough tomorrow morning.  Today my mom and I went to Target and had lunch at Wahoo's Fish Tacos and went to Trader Joe's and the bookstore.  I finally finished "The Vampire Diaries" and I guess I should be glad that the most traumatic thing that's happened to me is something that I've watched on television.

Pressed against the pane could see the veins

Typing on my macbook pro is really a lot of fun because you don't have to press the keys down very far and they're backlit which is nice, but my wrists get annoyed at bending over the edge of the laptop, at the bottom, you see, and I'm not really sure if there's anything I can do about that besides adjusting the way I type and keeping my hands in the air, which is probably better for my finger/wrist/arm muscles anyway.  Not that I have finger muscles.  But you can get this stress injury from too much typing.  Not that I have that.  But I think you see the point, which is that I don't have a point and am just rambling because I slept in until noon today and so I don't think I'm going to be able to sleep tonight.

Being portable with this thing is seriously amazing.  I'm lying on the floor right now.  Which to be honest isn't all that comfortable but the point is that I could never do this before.  Now I can get carpet burn as much as I want.

I really should have gotten a job this summer.  Or I should get some friends to hang out with on Friday nights so I can stop spending them like this.

And at once I knew I was not magnificent

I'm sitting here watching "Bones" because I finished season 4 at approximately 10:10 pm and the episode ended with Booth waking up from his coma and going, "who are you?" and so I asked myself, "should I watch another episode or go to bed?" and I decided I wanted to watch another episode.  Only now they've just found like eight bodies underneath a fountain based on the word of a psychic and I'm thinking serial killer and praying that it's not a serial killer because those are the ones that keep me up all night.

Today I got up too early to say au revoir to Gilly before she left for camp, and then I went out to lunch with my mom and had a strawberry banana crepe with caramel sauce.  Then we came home and cleaned my room and my mom magically made all of my new books fit on my bookshelf, and after dinner I washed my car.  Tomorrow I'm going to the movies with Ellie and on Friday I plan to work on moving my files to my new computer and I need to scan some stuff and work on the graduation collages.

I am so ready for Booth to admit that he's in love with Bones.

Somewhere down down down in the ocean

I am typing this from my new macbook pro, which is really nice and all, but also frustrating because I don't have a mouse for it and also because I don't know where the spaces go in its name and I'm not sure which letters to capitalize.  But the keys make a really satisfying clicking sound when I type.  Today I woke up to the lovely banging that meant that our solar panels aren't finished being installed yet, and I had cocoa crispies for breakfast, watched several episodes of "Bones" like I apparently do whenever I have a spare moment, and had lunch with Briana.  I meant to read all day today, but that didn't work out.  I came home from lunch and there was a brand new shiny computer that needed setting up, and then we went out to dinner and came home and watched some tv that Gilly wanted to watch before she leaves for camp tomorrow.

My mom is taking some classes later this week to renew her law license degree whatchamacallit, so I've got the house to myself Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.  There is so much I want to do:  finish The Help, work on the grad presents for my friends that I've been not working on in favor of my Wreck this Journal, go through my documents and decide which ones I want to transfer to my laptop, clean my room (including my closet and dresser and overflowing bookshelf), watch the final episode of the "Vampire Diaries", go to the library (which is closed on Thursday), write and write and write, install my sister's webcam, etc., etc., etc.  So why do I feel like I'll probably just sleep late and watch "Bones"?  I have a car and it needs an oil change and I have a credit card and I could go anywhere I want (anywhere that I can get without taking the freeway anyhow) and yet I want to stay home and watch "Bones" and clean.  There is something wrong with me.

This is the first year in a long time that Gillian is going to camp and I haven't hidden notes in all of her socks.  I hope she's not expecting it because there's really no feasible way I could at this point, since her bags are all in her room and I can't really sneak in there while she's sleeping.  And there's no way I'm getting up at 6 tomorrow to hide them while she's in the shower.  Maybe I'll just write her a nice letter and tuck it in the top of one of the bags while she's not looking.  I'm going to miss her next year.  I hope she's going to be okay.  She's so much smarter than me.  I hope she'll be fine.

We are alive

I got back from New York City last night.  While I was there, I saw "Arcadia" on Broadway and it was fantastic and I'm really lucky that my mom can afford to take me across the country to see plays and museum exhibits that really are once-in-a-lifetime opportunities.  And I went to the Met and I stood face to face with one of Van Gogh's self portraits, and I really do love them.  There's something so familiar about the idea that he didn't have any models but so had to paint, needed to, so he painted himself.  And I saw Starry Night at the MOMA - I didn't even know it was there.  I just turned a corner and there was a big crowd of people and there it was.  The colors are so vibrant even after so many years and standing there looking at it, I totally understood why it's considered his best painting, his masterpiece.  It gets inside you and makes your heart hurt.

Today I went to Jen's grad party, where I ate way too much even though I wasn't hungry and sat in the sun and it was fun.  Tomorrow I think we're seeing "Super 8" because we've been talking about it for a while, and I think I'm cleaning and I really have no obligations this summer and that's kind of exciting.

I guess we're all one phone call from our knees

Today I went to lunch and the bookstore and Staples with my family, not in that order.  Then on the way home my dad suddenly decided that he needed to go to the pool store, so my mom and my sister and I sat in the car for fifteen minutes while he bought a net named after a stingray.  Then we came home and I continued to do what I've been doing for the majority of this weekend, which is watch "Bones," to which I am completely addicted and cannot stop thinking about and as a result of that, cannot sleep at night.  Also this weekend I filled out some of my college paperwork, which is still not done and is due Tuesday at midnight.  Tomorrow I'm going to Knott's and then Tuesday is my birthday and also graduation which somehow comes second to my birthday in my mind even though I'm not doing anything for my birthday besides graduating so it's really not significant at all.

I feel like it's summer, in the sense that I've done pretty much nothing all weekend and am up late (or at least what's late for me), but it's been gloomy out and I miss the sun and what I really want for my birthday is for the sun to come out and remind me that I can stop and breathe.

These precious illusions did not let me down

I am not sad about this. At all. Thus is the end that I've been waiting for since the beginning. Tomorrow is probably the last day I will see a lot of the people that I see everyday, and that's so almost relieving. I've never thought that the world hates me. I've always known that it's me that hates the world. Or maybe I just hate high school. I can count my good memories from the last few years using only the fingers on my hands - or is that too harsh? I guess it'd be safe to say that my good memories of teenagerdom have either happened outside of school or have been totally overshadowed by the hellishness of everything else.

So I'm really really happy to be done. I'm never going to have to sit in a Los Al classroom silently feeling so uncomfortable and alone that I have to close my eyes and try to convince myself that I'm somewhere else. I know college is going to be a challenge for me, and not just academically. But I know that in order to grow I can't be stuck in high school forever.

And now somehow I feel like I'm trying to explain myself. It doesn't matter anyway.

Fighting dragons with you

I tend to measure how much things have changed based on past blog posts and old photographs and who came to my last birthday party.  I think maybe (actually I think probably for sure) that my aloneness is self-imposed.  But I don't think my loneliness is - I'm pretty sure they're not the same thing - because I feel it in the pit of my stomach even when I'm surrounded by people.  I've never really bought much into psychology but all I do is psychoanalyze myself and other people and wonder if it's really all got biological roots, genetic dispositions, things that I don't really understand and are maybe just used to excuse how much hurt we cause ourselves.

There are only four more school days left plus Knott's and graduation and as of last Tuesday there were nine days left and I can't understand why she had to drag this out again because now I can't stop thinking about it.  Only two people have asked me about it and I can't decide if that's good or bad because a part of me is wondering who else saw and what they think and then a part of me is like, who cares what they think?  And there I am again, trying to explain other people to myself, thinking that maybe instead of talking it to death when it first happened like I did she buried it deep down and denied that anything was wrong and now suddenly she's realized that things can't be fixed and it's all exploded out of her and she didn't realize the affects of her actions despite the R U Cyber Smart education we've all now been given.  At least that's what I want to believe, that she didn't set out to hurt me knowing that I'd see it.  Is that naive?  I'm not sure if I care.

I couldn't sleep last night, or the night before.  Next week I can sleep all day if I want to.  Somehow that's comforting, that idea.

And your heart is a stone buried underneath your pretty clothes

In fourteen days I will turn 18. Graduate from high school. Never have to see my least favorite people ever again. Do people really go to high school reunions? Only if I'm fat and alone and unhappy, mainly unhappy, could I ever see myself returning to high school. There's so much out there in the world that needs my help, so there's no reason to waste my time in the past. That sounds like the advice I give M or A and never listen to myself. I want to be happy. Is that a reasonable goal? When does it become selfish? I think I've thought about this before. My mind goes in circles, over and over, cycling through what I've already considered and making it feel brand new again. I wish that worked on people, places, the clothes in my closet.

I want to rewatch "Skins" this summer. I want to clean out my closet and my dresser and my bookshelf and I want to go through my massive collection of mostly blank notebooks. I want to see all of Woody Allen's films. I want to read David Foster Wallace. I want to take more pictures. I want to master freeway driving. I want to feel like I've accomplished something.

Would you really rush out for me now

Today I woke up late, went out with my mom, had dinner with my parents.  Talked excessively about accolades that I don't have and schools that I didn't get into.  Watched a movie about the financial crisis.  Reminded myself a million times that there are less than 10 days left, less than 10 more days during which I have to go to school and pretend and constantly remind myself that it's almost over.  There's a part of me that thinks that I've done this all wrong, these last four years, and then there's a part of me that knows that when I'm older, when I'm looking back on my past as if it were someone else's, "this", all of it, isn't going to matter at all.  Does that make any sense?  I guess whether or not I've done what I should doesn't make a difference, because it's in the past and I can't change it now.

Tomorrow I am going to do my homework and nothing else.  I have nothing to do anymore, and it's really scary and completely gratifying because it makes me feel a little like I haven't worked this hard for nothing.

Drinking on cheap bottles of wine

When a single line of a single song gets stuck in my head along with images from "A Single Man" which might be one of those things that I sink into and never come out of.

Don't turn out the light now light now

The days are going by so fast and it's almost graduation and I think I'm starting to panic because what if I'm not ready for the future and for living so far away? But at the same time I am so ready to be done with this insane competition to have better grades than everyone else and to look better too and I'm not really sure why but sometimes it feels like looking better is easier. I'm typing this from my bed and I guess I should go to sleep but there is a dog barking outside my window and the weather is totally erratic the opposite of static and so I can't wear my cute new shorts and so I don't know what to wear. God can this week just be over already?

Come on write me a song give me something to trust

I've figured out my Annie Hall outfit, which is basically my mother's pants and a tie and a hat, and it's really unattractive but I'm actually excited for this presentation, if only because I love this movie and want everyone else to love it too.  Which of course is naive, because I don't think "nerd" is an insult and I like The Shipping News and basically I don't think my brain works the same way everyone else's does.

Here is a picture from prom, which was fun and kind of gross and awkward but still fun.  Now I have a dress that I will never have an opportunity to wear again.  I'm really glad I never have to go to a high school dance ever again, because, in case it wasn't clear before, they really are not my thing.

I'll keep my eyes cast on the sun

Note to self:  lime green pen does not scan well.

I am beyond frustrated right now about things that don't really matter and I don't know what to do except go to bed even though I know I won't be able to sleep.  I hate how I can never get my computer to work the way I want it to and I hate how I can never finish a project once I start it and I hate how you put you and I on the same level today and expected me to agree with you even though I think you're an asshole and you don't know about that C on my transcript or that I'm leaving here to get far away from people like you.  But the sad thing is that as much as I hate you I still think you are more interesting than anyone else I've spoken to in the last week.  I hate that.

Tell me why I should run for cover

1. Yesterday I went to the Ke$ha concert with B and E and B did my makeup like I never dare to and I screamed so much I felt like I was going to lose my voice.  It was amazing and being outside at night feels different than being outside during the day which I know makes sense but I guess nothing I ever say does anyway.

2. Today Gillian and I went and saw "Prom" which was cute and made me cry, partly because it was too real and partly because it wasn't real at all and I hate how movies still subscribe to the whole imagined reality of high school and the way it should be.  Then we went to the bookstore and bought Mom's mother's day present.

3. I'm done with my AP tests now and nearly done with high school and even though I've been waiting for this for so long it's making me kind of sad and I don't even know what else to say about this.

4. I've been crying a lot lately.  Like in English class while watching a movie that I don't understand because of a young Johnny Depp and a baby Leo DiCaprio and I have this infinite fixation with time and sometimes I'm reading something and the words describe my thoughts better than I can and in those moments I always wish I have paper and a pen or maybe just a pen because I have a whole arm to write on.

5. I should go to sleep because it's getting late and I have things to do, or at least I should pretend I have things to do because other wise I won't do anything.

I let the day roll by I always say goodbye

It's funny (in a totally so-not-funny-that-I-want-to-shoot-myself sort of way) how a perfectly decent day can become completely horrible all because I find out that my Euro teacher passed out a 41-page packet the day before break even though I told him ahead of time that I was going to be missing school and he should've given it to me early, and also because my printer is broken and I can never pick the right shoes to wear shopping.  I'm sitting here now thinking how ridiculous it is to be pitying myself like this because I'm going to college and my parents are going to pay 50 grand a year for it, and I'm listening to John Mayer and trying to slow my heartrate down but it's not working.

I bought five more books at Powells last week and of course I've now overflowed my bookshelf again and I have nowhere to put them.  These are my problems.  These are seriously the problems that I think about when I can't sleep at night - what if I can't find a prom dress?  what if I get to college and everyone hates me?  how am I going to get to the Ke$ha concert next Friday?  next Friday?  what the hell happened to my senior year?

Tomorrow M is bringing over the 41-page packet for me to photo copy and then I'm going prom dress shopping with J and Michelle and then Michael's picking up his packet and then I'm going to a city council meeting.  Then this weekend my aunt and uncle and cousins are staying with us because one of my cousins is having her Bat Mitzvah, so I guess I'm finishing all my homework on Sunday even though that's my least favorite thing in the world besides printers, because I've been wasting away all week instead of working on it.  But I only let myself do this because I know that I'm not as bad as everyone else, because I've already finished the hellish Montana 1948 and I did two-thirds of the packet and I made a video for my gov project, and it sucks but my group will have to live with it, so really all I have left is the essay outline for lit and apparently a 41-page packet for Euro.

I need to sleep.  That's what I need to do, because apparently I need to be up by 8:30 to answer the door for M.

I'm a mile away from where I belong

I'm leaving for Portland tomorrow night, but before that I'm taking my Euro final, and I'm kind of terrified, moreso for Portland than the final.  I think how conscious I am of this fear of strangers and adults and children and anyone with thoughts and the potential to judge makes it even worse.  I can't remember ever stuttering or tripping over my words, and now I've developed a habit of both.  And I'm a ridiculously hypocritic person, going around worrying about everything and preaching this whole attitude of it doesn't matter what people think of you if you're happy yourself.  I hate, hate, hate that part of my happiness has to come from being liked by others - or maybe, not being disliked.

Maybe if I sleep on my Euro review book I'll absorb its contents via osmosis.

Run whirlwind run further and further away into the sun

My eyes hurt from my contacts and it really doesn't make any sense until I think about it, because I should be able to wear them all day, but if I wear them til 9 pm then that's more than a 12-hour day and I don't really think they're meant for that.  This evening after dinner I took my Sons and Lovers book, which has characters that I hate more than I've ever hated any characters ever, into the living room and read on the couch there, because even though the lights buzz and the windows look out on the street and I'm afraid of passers-by looking spying on me, every time I try to read on my bed I start to fall asleep.  My plant, Ginny VI or whatever number I'm on now, has grown really huge and now I think it's too heavy to stand up on its own, because no matter how much water I give it (and no I'm not overwatering it) it just keeps drooping down over the edge of the pot.  It's like Paul Morel, and it'll never be happy because its heart is too heavy because it's carrying the weight of others and doesn't know how to stop caring about itself so much so it can be happy.  That doesn't make any sense.

I'm reading The Once and Future King because I think King Arthur is someone who I should know a lot about, as I'm becoming one of those people who has something to say about every single book ever, despite not having read any of them.  I really really like it so far, because it's light and delightful and cute and also feels like it contains all the answers to every problem I've ever had and will have.  I wish I could write like that.

And you rip out all I had just to say that you won

I should be reading a book or doing homework or deciding where I'm going to college or something but instead I spent the early part of this evening watching the news and Anderson Cooper and Bill Maher and listening to sixty seconds of Obama's soothing voice and I really do think that no matter what you think about his politics, you have to admit that he has a wonderful voice.  Yesterday it rained for about five minutes and then the sun came out and shined down between the clouds and it was all very surreal and that's how I've been feeling lately, odd and like I'm stuck in this in-between zone between what's happened and what's coming.

I've been listening to boy bands a lot and writing in my dream journal and apparently not using commas, and I've been sitting quietly in English class and listening to boys talk crap about women and I haven't been saying anything about it because I almost feel like I'm leaving this school and these people in two months anyway and they don't care what I have to say so it doesn't really matter.

Now I think maybe I'll go read and go to bed and maybe get ten hours of sleep and then record all my dreams in the morning.

Sigh no more no more

I did very little of anything this weekend, and I slept twelve hours last night and sweat out a fever and I feel really good right now and I'm in a really good mood and there's school tomorrow so I know it won't last but do you ever wish that you could pause time and make a moment last forever?  Not this moment, necessarily, this moment where I'm sitting in my pajamas listening to my fingers hitting the keys thinking that I should go to bed early and read for a while, but a moment from Friday night or from yesterday when I was sick and watching "The Vampire Diaries" and things were perfect because that's all there was.  I don't know where I'm going next year but I think that's okay because for some reason short-term plans are satisyfing enough for right now.

That's really all I have to say right now.  What happened to my long endless rambling grammar-less blog posts that spun into baseless musings on God-only-knows-what?

And this is what she said, she said to me

It's kind of terrifying me that I have absolutelynoidea where I'm going next year, because I can't make up my mind and and scared of being crushed by books and don't like smoke and I don't know what I want.  Tomorrow I am going to nearly fail a Euro test and tutor a sophomore in French and hopefully go to bed early, even though I say that every night and never actually do.

I really want to be a painter and I want to paint on sheets of newspaper and glue them to walls and then leave and not watch the reactions of the people who come in.  I have this idea in my head of writing a play, if only because I've been basically incapable lately of writing anything more than snapshots of moments, but that's also terrifying because I have no idea how to write a play, so I don't even want to start. Why is that my attitude toward everything?  It shouldn't be.  I can't seem to take my own advice, ever.

Ya got heart and you're going your own way

So on Monday it appears that I was ridiculously happy but the week basically went downhill from there, and today was a horrible end to a horribel series of days and I'm so glad it's the weekend and right now I'm eating a kitkat and listening to Noah and the Whale and thinking about how I really ought to start a dream diary because this morning I tapped the shorthanded details of last night's into my ipod with one hand while I was eating breakfast.  Tomorrow I'm going to a beach clean-up and then making crepes with J and B and S and maybe E and then I think we're going to the mall, maybe, and I'm spending Sunday learning math and doing all the history homework I've been putting off for the past week.

There are a bunch of empty journals on my bookshelf and so maybe I should go pick one up and write last night's dream in it and keep it by my bed with all my other notebooks and then when I'm famous and dead or just dead, someone will read it and laugh at how much I thought I was like every fictional character I've ever read about.

I'm at this place in my head right now where I feel like I can't talk to anyone, but not because no one will listen, more because no one cares.  We've all got our own problems and I think my problem is that I'm creating problems out of nothing in my head and agonizing over them until they make my stomach hurt.  I think I just need to sleep.

How would you cope if the world decided to make you suffer for all that you are

Today my mom mentioned that I can take dance classes in college, and while I really have no desire at all to take dance classes, the whole idea of taking a dance class, just the idea of it, is kind of appealing.  I have five tests in three days next week, which is next week but it's kind of scaring me anyhow.  I've been trying to write this for about a half hour now, but I'm in such a good mood that I have nothing to say, and I just went and reread some of my posts from December and for some reason sentences always sound better in my head when they don't have any commas.  I have new favorite songs and a pretty solid A in math and a B+ in French but I think I can fix that, and I made cookies the other day and also hamentashen, and I got four acceptances today which brings the total up to five, and so basically I can't think of anything to be sad about right now.  But I think I'm going to start getting rejections at the end of the week, probably as many as I've gotten acceptances.  Which is all part of the experience, I guess.

I'm going to do more homework tomorrow than I did today.  I promise.

Turn my sorrow into treasured gold

I had this really horrible day yesterday where I saw a guy at school who reminded me of one of my favorite characters and then I remembered that the character dies at the end and everything I felt the first time I watched the character die came back to me and all I wanted to do was go home and sleep for a week, but instead I had to go to English class.  I'm listening to Miley right now and she's not making me feel better even though it's Friday and  I don't have a lot of homework and I got a 97 on my last math test.  I really, really want it to be summer already.  Or at least May 1.

Could it be that time has taken its toll

Today I was looking out my window to see if the mailman had come yet, and I looked down and there was this perfect pink flower from the cherry tree in our yard on the roof of my car.  I really need to wash my car, and I'm so lucky that I even have a car, and I really really hate Macbeth for being so stupid and I can't decide if I hate him more than I hate Hamlet or if I hate them equally.  I keep starting books and then putting them aside for later and starting new ones, and the same with these characters that keep appearing in my head, begging for names and time and a place to exist.

I don't think Tuesday was anything special, besides being the day that I went to the library and got my computer back, but it's the only day on my happy things calendar that's made sense to me.  I spent almost every day this week thinking that it was the 8th.  I guess I never write the date down anymore, so I can never keep track of it, even though every morning I rip the top sheet off of my calendar and read the next list.  Sometimes I get the feeling that I'm not doing enough to record my life, like someday I'm going to have kids and they're going to want to know what my life was like when I was 17 and I won't be able to tell them because I just won't remember, but I seem to recall someone saying something about how preoccupied we (meaning this generation) is with recording every passing moment, and how we let things pass by in the process.

But I can't move the mountains for you

I really need a haircut but I'm trying to grow it out and also I guess I've given up my curling iron and straightener and blow dryer for Lent, even though I'm not Catholic and have no plans to be anytime soon.  I've watched more movies in the last week ("Sweet Home Alabama") than I have in the past three months, and I went to the library yesterday to get Pride and Prejudice but I couldn't find it, which was kind of upsetting, but then I came home and found my copy on Gillian's bookshelf.  So now I'm rereading it for the billionth time and it gets funnier and more right every time I read it.  It makes me so happy.

Time is going by really fast now, and I'm losing track of what day it is and tomorrow's Thursday already even though I'm pretty sure yesterday was Monday, and I have the ticket stub from "The King's Speech" on my picture board above my desk and the date on it is 12/29/10, and I can't believe it's been that long.  But all that means that graduation is so much closer.  God, I can't wait.

Roll away your stone I'll roll away mine

I think I'm predisposed to be pessimistic, or at least realistic, in the sense that people make me sad and I keep expecting the worst from everyone and I can't seem to finish good books because I know they're going to break my heart.  I'm sitting here listening to Mumford & Sons and what I really want to do is go run through fields of daisies and forget about college letters and math tests and Macbeth.  My head is full of the imagery of winter, grays and blues and clouds and long hair and scarves and cold noses and big piles of leaves.  I'm so excited to live where it snows.

Tonight I went to dinner with my mom at a vegetarian hippie sort of place in Fullerton where she used to go when she was in college.  Then we went to the bookstore and didn't buy anything, and came home and watched "The Romantics", which wasn't very good but was pretty nonetheless and kind of related to Arcadia because isn't that how things work, things in life always relate to what I've read in class?  Just one of those laws of nature, like it always rains when I really don't want it to and math tests are always hard.  Tomorrow Gilly and I are going to the movies.  As much as I'm so ready to graduate, I love this time right now that I get to spend with my little sister and with my favorite fictional characters and with myself.  I like being alone.  Will I ever get to be alone next year?

I should go to sleep but I know I won't.  Another one of those rules of life.

Everyone wants to hear their story told

This guy with extremely blue eyes sits kind of across from me in government, and a few times today I looked up and thought he was looking in my direction, although of course he wasn't doing any work and so he was probably just zoning out somewhere, but anyhow my point is that it's completely unsettling because his eyes remind me of Matt Bomer's and also of the blue in a crayon box.  It's raining again, and it was absolutely freezing today, which is also kind of unsettling, but in a good way because I think it keeps me awake.  I have so much to do this weekend but I spent tonight writing instead, which makes me feel good and accomplished and like I'm not actually wasting my time and putting off things that I should be doing.

I think someone was in my closet today, and I only think that because the doors were switched from how I always have them.  But there's always the possibility that I accidentally closed them wrong this morning before I left for school, which is another unsettling thing, kind of like when I forget to put my contacts in or try to open the wrong locker.

I hope it doesn't rain tomorrow.

Don't cover yourself with thistle and weeds

I have a headache that won't go away, and people are dying on the other side of the world.  I read three books this weekend, went to the movies, finished all my homework, hung out with my friends like I never do.  I ran outside after the rain and finished a roll of film, started crocheting a scarf, began writing a new story.  If it rains again this week, I'm going to be glad for it, if only because my car needs a bath.  I should go to bed early tonight but I know I won't.  I wish there wasn't so much I wanted to do, but I guess then I'd be nothing, or no one.

I ran out of film right before I noticed the reflection of the trees in the gutter, so I took a bunch with my digital, but I feel like it distorts the color.  Real life is so much brighter than anything a camera can give me.

But my heart told my head this time no

Today Gilly and I bought Mom a carrot cake for her birthday, which she will have to eat by herself because none of the rest of us like carrot cake.  Tomorrow we're going out to breakfast and to the movies, and it's a four day weekend.  I have so many projects to do, and I'm going to "Macbeth" on Saturday night, and trig is hard and I hate it, but I've been writing a lot lately and it's been distracting me from forthcoming college rejections.  I like the way the pen feels on the paper and I think that's the root of it, it makes me feel accomplished, and I think that's why everything I write by hand is so much better than what I type.

Me and this blog are growing apart.  I can't finish a post, and I can't sleep through the night.
